Safety Corridor
Jack and I have seen signs on the side of the road that say “Safety Corridor next 5 miles” or whatever and have always wondered what a “Safety Corridor” was. Today I read an article in the Columbian about a fatal crash on Highway 26 in a section that was designated a Safety Corridor. In the article they briefly explained what a Safety Corridor was: “[A designated Safety Corridor] brings money for traffic engineering. For [a road] to qualify, it [needs] to meet a set of criteria, the most significant of which is exceeding the statewide average for crashes on that type of roadway by 10 percent.”
Yikes! I always have minor anxiety issues before we take any type of road trips. And it’s worse when my kids are on road trips with someone other than us as the driver. I can totally work myself up with worry, especially when I know it’s a long drive. Why do articles like that have to appear on a day my kids were on their way back from week spent at a lake in Eastern Oregon with my sister and brother-in-law. It’s an 8-hour drive to get home. I couldn’t get a hold of them on the phone all day. Yeah, that made me feel soooo good! (They are home safe and sound, now.)
