Microalbumin Urine Test

I’ve had a Microalbumin Urine Test done the last few times I’ve gone to the doctor for my A1C. The first time I got the lab results back, it came back as 30 H. It listed on the same sheet that the normals were 0 - 20. The notes that came with the report listed this result as normal and there was no damage to my kidneys.

The last time I had this test done (May 2nd, 2005), it came back as a 30 H again. This time the notes listed “abnormal” as the result but there was no notes from my doctor.

So, obviously it’s been bugging me a bit. Which report do I go by? One says 30 is normal and there is no damage (even though the “Normals” are listed as 0-20) or do I go by the one that says that’s an abnormal result?

Today I read on another blog about this test and she posted a link to this page on WebMD. This page lists a normal reading for a Random (spot) urine sample is less than 30.

At first I thought that’s close enough. Obviously I’m close enough to normal for one lab tech to consider 30 “normal” while another lab tech thinks otherwise. And I assume that my doc thinks 30 is close enough too. But that kind of thinking scares me. Even a little tiny itty bitty amount of kidney damage is kinda scary, ya know? And maybe 30 *is* considered normal enough…. ???

Bottom line is, today I tried to make myself feel better about it (I’m not mega stressing or anything. It just nags at me a little) and only made things worse by reading all about kidney damage. Oi!

  1. Hi Kiri,
See my reply to your comment at http://www.diabetesmine.com. Basically, I think we all need to be better about INSISTING that our doctors explain this stuff to us. Why should we have to stress about complications that may not even exist?

  2. Tracie, I stress myself out when I start researching medical stuff on the internet. It can be very helpful, but it can also be more info than you need if there’s not a doctor right there to talk with you about it. I’d be curious myself.

  3. We should talk to the doctor and mention to them that you have no gall bladder as well. I wonder if that could push those test numbers up?

You are doing AWESOME though… I’m so proud of you, and I’m here for you.. healthy kidneys or not.
