Media - Do they really gives us what we want?
I am not fond of Britney Spears overall (her music does nothing for me) and she certainly isn’t a role model for my children, but the girl needs help and I feel sorry for her. She needs a LOT of help. More than just drug rehabilitation. And I think the media is making things worse for her. They sit and wait for her to make mistakes, and I suspect even set her up to do so. And calling her fat? Please. Do people in general honestly think that? Or is the media so screwed up that unless you’re 90 pounds soaking wet you’re “fat”?? Leave the poor girl alone and let her get her life back together.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I see articles in magazines, newspapers, etc and 90% of what I am seeing is total garbage. I’m not talking about tabloid magazines either. Some of these media mediums were, or so I thought, respectable. Maybe there is no such thing?
Dove puts out a Campaign for Real Beauty that features real women in all shapes and sizes. Then they put out the video Onslaught last week on YouTube. Many criticize their campaign saying Dove is contradicting themselves because they sell beauty products and/or don’t really care, they just want to make money. (Well, duh, all businesses want to make money.) I personally think it’s brilliant and a step in the right direction. I’m tired of seeing fake, air-brushed women in billboards and magazines and would rather see the REAL world, REAL women, and REAL men portrayed in the media.
So the question I want answered is who’s fault is it that the media portrays things this way? Is this what people really want? Do people really want all the dirt on Britney they can get their hands on? Do people really think women are only beautiful in one size and shape? Who started this? Us? Or them? If it’s not what we want (I certainly don’t), why do we put up with it?
