Dreamhost and Lunarpages

There’s been quite the scandal in the web hosting world lately. Dreamhost, a rather large web hosting provider and the company that happens to be my web host, had a major billing snafu. In a nutshell, during a manual update of their billings they accidentally billed for December 2008 (it should have been 2007). This resulted in their computers thinking everyone was past due on their bills and it automatically sent out late notices, charged accounts, suspended accounts, etc. It was mistake of large proportions and I imagine extremely embarrassing for Dreamhost.
But that isn’t the scandal.
Dreamhost owned up right away to what happened. The same day (within hours even) they discovered their goof they had a post up on their status blog with updates, and shortly after that a post on their regular blog that explained in detail what happened. The posted in their usual casual/joking style and this did not go over well with many, so they added two more serious posts with updates and what they were going to do to fix the mess: Refund any erroneous charges, reimburse overdraft fees, and even allow customers to cancel their account with Dreamhost for a refund even if they were outside the 97 day money back guarantee period.
Lunarpages chose to respond to the billing issue at Dreamhost by posting a comment on the Dreamhost blog with a link to their post about the situation. Take notice the post title now: “Robbing Your Customers?”. This is not what the post title originally was. The title was, “Dreamhost Robbing Their Customers”. This is what I saw originally. The proof is in the wordpress permalink (url) for the post:
blog.lunarpages.com/2008/01/15/dreamhost-robbing-their-customers/
Here’s where the scandal lies.
I used to work for Lunarpages. I worked for them for three and a half years. I know who Amy Armitage is and I know how she thinks. I was the assistant manager for customer service and worked side by side with upper management so my knowledge of how they operate is from deep on the inside. Amy prides herself on her ‘quick thinking’ skills and her ‘go get ‘em’ attitude. The problem is she rarely thinks before she reacts and this often makes Lunarpages look like fools. Her Dreamhost post proves this tenfold. Instead of leaving it as-is and taking the flack they instantly received for their vulturous attitude towards Dreamhost, they changed the post title, re-worded the content of the post and censored all the comments. The only comments allowed through are the ones bashing Dreamhost and praising Lunarpages. You don’t have to take my word for it either. There’s screenshots over at Web Hosting Talk of comments people have tried to post that haven’t been allowed through. Lunarpages has even gone as far as banning people for stating their opinion about the situation on their blog.
Now go look at Dreamhost’s blog about this situation. They have literally over a thousand comments across three different posts and threads about this situation. Note the many many comments bashing Dreamhost right on their own soil over this billing faux pas.
Dreamhost endures the heat.
Lunarpages can’t. Lunarpages won’t. In fact, Lunarpages wouldn’t admit there was even heat to begin with. Don’t even bother trying to call them out on their turf. Your opinion would never be allowed and you’d likely get yourself banned. It’s already happened.
Dreamhost made a statement about the Lunarpages situation and admit they (Dreamhost) likely started it with a post last fall about Lunarpages stealing 404 traffic from their own customers:
Full disclosure: I believe they made that post in response to DreamHost offering ‘refugee codes’ and blog posts about their company like this one: http://blog.dreamhost.com/2007/10/10…our-customers/
They finally had an opportunity to strike back.

The commentary from the ‘Renown Web Development Technician and Software Development Lead’ did make for some funny reading, though. What’s a ‘portal infrastructure’ anyway?!
Do you see the difference in how the two web hosting companies operate? Are they both being childish? Sure. They remind me a bit of the Mac -vs- Windows commercials. But who’s honest and up front in these situations? It sure isn’t Lunarpages. And it’s no surprise to me.
In my opinion, Lunarpages routinely uses dishonest and unscrupulous tactics to promote their business.
This includes requiring their employees and staff to post positive comments on their blog posts and to write fake reviews on various review websites, especially if a negative review had been posted by a true customer. We were asked to bury those real reviews with positive fake ones. Lunarpages gave us free web hosting accounts so it was easy to “prove” we were “customers” and our fake reviews got posted. I have lost count how many fake reviews I have posted across tons of review websites in the 3.5 years I worked at Lunarpages.
Here are some examples of the fake reviews:
http://www.besthostratings.com/web-hosting/lunarpages.html
The post from Kiri? That’s me. I did that at Amy’s request while on the clock. So I was paid to write it. The reviews from Ryan Jackson, Scott, Craig Sadil, and Miraenda were all paid for by Lunarpages as they were all staff members.
http://www.webhostingjury.com/reviews/Lunarpages
The ‘reviews’ by Kiri (me again), chase, twitch, James, chapterthree, David, Ryan were all paid for as again these people were staff of Lunarpages at the time the reviews were written. We were asked to post them during our shifts.
I was also asked to start this thread at Web Hosting Talk. The first post isn’t even Kiri’s (my) words. Amy wrote it. She wanted to exploit an accusation that she was using sex to sell web hosting that came about over her ’sexy’ photo on the Lunarpages MySpace page. The rest of the posts on that thread were mine, but I don’t use words like “lamer” or “cyberland”, trust me.
(07:20:52) amy: check this
(07:21:09) amy: we are gonna create a PR slut storm
(07:21:13) amy: [digg link]

(07:22:52) amy: and later someone can link it on the forum in that post and we’ll get all MAD bout what they are suggesting
(07:22:54) amy: ;0
(07:23:04) amy: my seo guy suggested it
(07:23:15) Tracie: hehe fun stuff
Note she says “not mods” meaning not the volunteer moderators.. she wanted PAID staff members. Then later that day:
(09:43:20) amy: do they have some kinda gossip section over at wht? Imagine if the host haters over there got a hold of the story
(09:46:32) Tracie: not that i know of
(09:49:53) Tracie: i just lost all lp connection?
(09:50:12) amy: my mail is down atm too
(09:50:14) amy: lemme find out

(10:03:55) Tracie: sure
(10:03:58) Tracie: tell me what to say
(10:04:14) amy: ok lemme write
(10:08:24) amy: I’m not sure if this is the correct forum to address this, but I’d really like to open up a discussion on women in IT. I’ve been seeing more and more articles and blogs lately on women in IT or the lack of women and since I ventured into cyberland, I also see it a lot.I’m a regular on the forums of my web host and I was really upset today to see suggestions that one of the women there is successful because of her sexuality. Some lamer posted a rumor on Digg (link)
I know that majority of users on this forum are men, however are we so in the dark ages that beliefs and rumors like this are acceptable?
(10:08:31) amy: see didn’t mention lunarpages
(10:08:35) amy: they can’t delete it
(10:12:39) Tracie: lol ok
(10:13:58) amy: wonder if they will delete it

(10:29:38) amy: wonder if they will pull it
(10:30:10) Tracie: guess we’ll find out
(10:30:12) amy: are u a member on sitepoint?
(10:30:28) Tracie: yes but there I’m Staff
(10:34:20) amy: me too lol
http://digg.com/users/alderoneas — This is the user who first dug this, and it’s actually Amy. Most of the comments on the digg article are Lunarpages staff as well.

The photo in question isn’t even Amy. Here’s the MySpace photo and a photo of Amy to compare. The only similarities is the hair color. I asked who the photo on the MySpace page was of and was told she was a friend.
(12:41:46) Tracie: whoa.. wtf? that’s not Amy: http://myspace.com/lunarpages
(12:42:08) chad: lol
(12:42:16) chad: no, its a friend of ours
(12:42:23) Tracie: k. it’s trippy
Coincidentally, Lunarpages very recently made their MySpace profile private. Maybe I’m not the first one to call them out on the fake picture of “Amy”?
I’m not proud that I was a part of these tactics.. at all. In fact it’s one of things that bothers me the most about my time with them. At the time I was told all web hosting companies do it and that most review sites are bogus anyway. They are owned by affiliates who get a commission if someone signs up using the links to the hosts on their sites. Several review sites are actually owned by web hosting companies.
In conclusion, what happened with Dreamhost sucked for a lot of people. But they were open and honest about it and have endured the megatons of heat thrown at them. Lunarpages proved once again they don’t even know what the word ‘honesty’ means, and that they run and hide from any sort of heat thrown their way. Unfortunately, this is only one of the serious issues that plagues Lunarpages.
Maybe sometime I’ll tell you all about the time they orchestrated their biggest reduction in force ever, and left a few of us to play it out alone while they ran off to a vacation in the Grand Canyon on the week the RIF took place.
If you want others to know about this, please Digg It!

Update #3: Be sure to check out the comments on this post. Another former staff member of Lunarpages weighs in with their opinion.
Update #4 Here’s yet another great post from a former Lunarpages customer that explains in detail his perspective of the Lunarpages 404 blunder and how it compares to the Dreamhost billing accident: Dreamhost, Lunarpages, $$$, and integrity
Update #5 This thread gets mentioned quite a bit on various web hosting forums. On April 28, 2008 this post was mentioned again over at WebHostingTalk under the thread titled, Lunar Pages now doing direct spamming!! What a thread title! Amazingly it seems it’s true as the original poster posted the headers of the email spam he received and sure enough it came from Lunarpages servers:

[...] Seems there are more folks out there that have some knowledge of LP’s practices. Check out this post by someone in the know: DreamHost and Lunarpages [...]
I don’t use Dreamhost or Lunar Pages. However, Dreamhost is as pretty as you have made them out to be either. If you read through the 30 pages of comments, there are people who still haven’t been refunded yet including the guy they billed $9000 to. They went and billed everyone again yesterday too.
Lisa,
The situation for Dreamhost sucks for sure. But this post really wasn’t about making Dreamhost look pretty. It was about Dreamhost taking the heat while Lunarpages, who threw themselves into the situation, can’t.
[...] Just a short post here, but check this out — http://spacytracie.com/dreamhost-and-lunarpages/391/ [...]
Dreamhost has been our hosting site for almost eight years (and then we recently added on RackSpace — which we will be moving everything over to eventually), but this issue definitely was a huge nasty surprise. Because we’ve had so much history with them it was easy not to freak out, knowing they’d make good and fix it all. Their response time was fantastic. For someone who may be new to Dreamhost, it may seem more annoying than it did to us.
Lunarpages taking advantage of such a situation would just make me sick to my stomach, especially if I was a former employee. Good thing you’re not there anymore.
Oh I’m quite happy not working for them anymore.
This is to Lisa who seems to have attitude about Dreamhost when she does not even have an account there.
Dreamhost made a mistake. My husband and I have an account with them. We were billed. They have apparently worked hard to fix the problem. I applaud them for that. They have been refunding money for the fees and charges too.
Uh, Lisa, we did NOT get billed again. For someone who doesn’t have an account with them, you seem to have a lot of attitude about them and act like you know what’s going on. How? I think Dreamhost is honorable and honest. Most companies would have tried to sweep it under the rug, deny it all and lie, lie, lie.
Dreamhost was upfront, honest and made the effort to get things fixed. Now, I do not know if everyone has been repaid yet but I bet they will be.
Now, Lisa, how is it you know that they haven’t paid everyone when you obviously had no clue about the rebilling?
I cannot say anything about the other company other than if all this is true about them, I sure am glad I didn’t get hooked up with them. Whew!
Tracie, I applaud you for your honesty about the other company and I totally understand why you would not want to work there again. Thanks for this post. It’s eye opening for sure.
Nice post! It’s always refreshing to see honesty occasionally appear on the hosting scene.
They didn’t even give enough time for people to stop hating them over the 404 Scam before pulling this crap.
Dreamhost made a mistake and they are paying for it. It happens. Lunarpages, on the other hand, couldn’t be honest about anything if their lives depended on it.
Jaz and Lisa, I actually never got charged and only got two notifications (back to back) that my account was past due. I didn’t get suspended and wasn’t negatively affected by Dreamhost’s goof at all. Other than being subjected to Lunarpages’ crap.
The comments at Dreamhost’s blog about this have gone a bit crazy and I’d not believe all you read from some of those crazies.
Mike, thanks. I totally agree.
[...] A former Lunarpages employee writes about the current sitation and provides a behind-the-scenes look at LP’s tactics: Dreamhost and Lunarpages [...]
Nice work - already knew they (LP) sucked doggy balls, but wow.. absolutely ZERO business ethics.. that Amy deserves to be shat upon from a great height, and I believe in karma. Doesn’t make me any more impressed with DH, just less impressed with LP, but thanks for the info.
Looked at Amy’s photo.. yeah, nasty vindictive bitch who’d clearly stab her daughter in the back in order to pull off a scam against her own grandmother. Nasty piece of work.
LOL Dog. Tell us how you REALLY feel?!
Just to verify what Tracie is saying, it’s true. I too am a former contractor for LP, thankfully I only endured 16 months of it rather than 3.5 years as Tracie did. We were indeed asked to post good reviews for LP during our working hours. Prior to working for them I had never in my 4 years of being in this industry been asked to post a review for a company I was working for. I was shocked and disgusted by this and refused to play the little games when I was asked… it’s just goes against my morals as a human being. I also was there the day that the post was made on WHT but wasn’t told that it was a sham until hours later, and that to didn’t sit so well with me. I remember discussing LP tactics with other workers at the time and everyone seemed quite disturbed by this.
So Kudo’s to Tracie for bringing this bit of underhandedness out into the open.
Thanks for stopping by and weighing in, Jayna. I appreciate it.
I can verify that Jayna did indeed work for Lunarpages back when this was going on. If you want proof, here’s a screenshot of Lunarpages’ contact page.
About the screenshot. It’s a very recent shot. My opinion on this is Lunarpages is either extremely lazy or they know no bounds for their dishonesty because Jayna and Clayton haven’t worked at Lunarpages in months! Yet Lunarpages still advertises they do.
It’s gotta drive Lunarpages nuts that you backup everything you say here, which means they can’t stoop to the usual legal threat tactic to try getting you to take it down.
Instead, I guess they’ll have to try to even it out by writing some more fake reviews about themselves.
Mike, they’ll just stick their heads in the sand and play dumb per normal.
On the screen shot of “current” employees… it appears to randomly pick the photos/people to show. The first time I saw it, Jayna wasn’t listed, but after reloading the order of photos changed and she was listed.
I’m a former LP customer who switched to Dreamhost after the 404 fiasco. I’ve heard similar stories from other LP employees that I’ve run into that match up with what Tracie (and Jayna) have said here. In fact, in hindsight I think I probably drank more of the LP kool-aid than I’d care to admit and was a big supporter of them for several months. But, the more I learned about “behind the scenes” actions, the more betrayed I felt even though they never did anything “specifically” to me. My disgust with their tactics though was enough for me to switch hosts when the offer from DH came out. Not sure if I’ll stick with DH long-term, but it was a great opportunity for me to leave LP…
Thanks for the comment, GMTurner! You’d think they’d fix who they have actually working for them, ya know? I mean.. why LIE? It’s been over six months since the three of us left. Maybe they just can’t let go.
I hope you’re happy no matter which host you decide on!
I’m relieved like the others, both ex employees/customers alike, in not having to deal with Lunarpages any longer. I worked for LP just under 2 years, and during that time they did request us to post phony reviews and other nonsense while on the clock. Like Jayna, this was definitely something that wasn’t me. I choose to join the IT industry (support) to help and assist, not to mislead and lie.
As far as the pictures still being up, thats just pure laziness. I’m curious how long they will stay up.
I’m glad that Tracie has posted this, as it sure does open your eyes in regards to how far some companies/individuals will go.
why were you fired tracy? From my experience a company can’t just up and fire someone for nothing.
You worked there for almost 4 years……you had no problem with them as a company that entire time, but they fire you and now they are assholes………wow, that seems pretty credible.
you seem more like a disgruntled employee to me
i mean, seriously, how long ago was it and you still rambling on about it?
Meybe you need some counseling?
ok, ok, now lets hear another book full of reasons you are a….a….what?
counseling dear….
I’m certain that Lunarpages, much Like Microsoft, or any other large successfull comapny doesn’t loose any sleep over the blabering of an obsessed, disgruntled X-employee…
ya think?
btw, you seem more then a little pathertic, (and transparant) just a little input from an outsiders point of view.
and btw, why do you have an addvertisement for Lunarpages on your page in your adds by google?
dude, HAHAHAHA
your really a freak kiddo, seriously. they are assholes but you are willing to make money advertising them?
oh, waiting moderation, speaking of editing….this prolly won’t make it becuase….LP made you do it?
hahah
Folks, I do believe we have the same Lunarpages employee who posted at WHT here on SpacyTracie.com!
IP traces to Southern Californa, Verizon internet, Pico Rivera which happens to be pretty close to La Habra, home of Lunarpages’ office.
Same bad grammar, same horrible spelling, same insulting post style, thinks girls should be called ‘dude’. (And doesn’t know how Google Adsense works.)
That definitely has to be a Lunarpages employee and is a perfect match to their company image.
You lack experience, then. Any company can fire anyone for any reason they want to, without exception, regardless of any laws. They just can’t admit they do it, but it’s done all the time.
Just because you work somewhere doesn’t mean you don’t have a problem with them. Or are you the only person in the world that has never heard anyone say that they hate their job?
And as far as credibility goes, what does that say for an anonymous coward like you, that clearly isn’t too bright, and is most likely just a shill for Loserpages? Is that what you call credibility?
What she’s “rambling” about is a current event that Lunarpages has brought on themselves and has nothing to do with being employed there.
She has even admitted to wrong-doing WHILE employed there, which shows honesty on her part and complete lack of ethics on LP’s part.
Wishful thinking, lumping them in with Microsoft. Lunarpages is barely big enough to be considered a pimple on Dreamhost’s ass.
What’s next, are you going to compare a yard sale in your trailer park to Wal-mart?
People with no moral compass usually don’t lose sleep.
It’s funny when someone that is pathetic, spells pathetic wrong while trying to call someone else it.
You’re like the grammar cops that spell it with an “e” at the end… only more “pathertic.”
Pretty clueless on how contextual advertising works, aren’t you?
I’m not saying that’s the only area you’re clueless in–just adding it to the list.
Don’t you feel stupid now? You must have thought you were posting on the fabricated blog of lies at Lunarpages.
Let’s tally up the score on this subject:
Tracie: Allows negative comments. Honesty.
Dreamhost: Allows negative comments. Honesty.
Lunarpages: Intentionally deceiving readers while deleting any comments that don’t help their sad agenda. Deceptive and underhanded tactics that no respectable business would resort to.
Report back to LP that you made your stupid post here, as told, and get your pat on the back like a good boy. Loser.
LOL, Mike. You’re gooooood.

Tracie,
I just wanted you to know what happened in court today against Lunarpages. The papers have been submitted for a default judgment against them; but this is what they did in court.
Mehmet vs Add2Net NY
Chad Riddle and Tiara Rea lied today about Tiara not being a program manager. They told the court that Tiara was just an assistant. You and I know that’s not true and I will be submitting additional evidence I received to the court that will hit them with huge punitive damages. The judge is going to be furious at them. In addition, the issue with their fake reviews posted on other websites is about to get them in a lot of trouble. That’s fraud.
Let me know if you have any more examples of fake postings and I’ll keep you informed.
David
Just a quick update on that deal. That guy wasn’t overcharged $9,000… but rather, he was over REFUNDED $9,000 and he took the money and ran. Along with $170,000 worth of other thieving customers that don’t seem to want to give back the money.
See the whole update on the DH blog. It ended up costing them over $300,000. Without customers stealing money, it would have still been $130,000 which isn’t cheap.
http://blog.dreamhost.com/2008/03/21/good-reminiscing-friday/
I just think it’s funny that DH admitted they were wrong, refunded all of the money, doubled it in hosting credits AND paid all bank fees for people that overdrafted.
In return, the customers that made the most noise stole $170,000. Those dirtbags should go work for Lunarpages.

I know from first hand knowledge what a horrible company this is. The things i witnessed i could only shake my head at. Ever wonder how lunarpages got the coffee cup deal. All i can say it involves a strip club amy and a couple guys from coffecup.
Just an update on the Lunarpages.com lawsuit. The judge did not believe the testimony of Tiara Rea when she said she never received the summons and complaint. The judge ordered everyone in for a hearing next week, which requires Chadd Riddle and Tiara Rea to fly to New York for the hearing. We have an abundant amount of evidence against them that proves they lied to the judge, which we will be presenting at the hearing. I’ll post their written testimony on the Internet. This is going to be really interesting and entertaining to watch while they sweat through their testimony on the record.
The attorney for Lunarpages.com called me and said that they wanted to know if I would drop the hearing and they would accept the S&C. It was clear the attorney was young and green. I told him NO. It was a ridiculous request.
BTW, I pulled a copy of a lawsuit against Lunarpages in California, which consisted of similar facts pertaining to Lunarpages wrongly cutting off someone’s website and failing to give them access to their database files. This makes our case stronger against them.
I’ll keep you updated. There is one fact for sure, no matter if its New York or California, Lunarpages will not escape this lawsuit. They will face the music for their bad conduct.
